When Blake Shelton made an appearance on Kelly Clarkson’s talk show last month, the pair had so much to catch up on that “there’s no way it could all fit in one show.”

Clarkson revealed a new part of the conversation with Shelton during her show on Wednesday (June 25). As Shelton spoke about his new studio album, For Recreational Use Only, he proved “he’s more country than anyone else on planet Earth.”

Clarkson read some of the lyrics to “Stay Country or Die Tryin,’” the opening song on Shelton’s new 12-track record. Shelton sings: “Seven generations from a dirt road corn crop/ Boots ain't never seen easy street/ Where a skeeter gets slapped 'bout as fast as a star drops/ Roots run deep in this family tree.”

“You went real country,” she said with a laugh. Shelton compared his country-style pronunciation of a few words with Clarkson — including “mosquito or skeeter,” and “tomatoes or just maters” — and Clarkson observed, “you do have pride when it comes to that country lifestyle. …Like, ‘cause you’re always, I see you, you’re always on some kind of ATV, John Deere, just looking like some backwoods [censored]. You’re out, I’m like, all you’re missing is your mullet, man. …I’ll tell you who’s Emmy-winning, is our editors. We have to edit this a lot. …If I see posts from you or something, it’s always like, something very country going on.”

Shelton hilariously replied, “checking out my cousins, all that stuff, man. …We try to keep it country on my socials.”

Together, the duo also spoke about Shelton’s career goals after scoring his 30th No. 1 single with “Texas,” a track on For Recreational Use Only with a nod to legendary country star George Strait. Shelton said he wanted to team up with Clarkson on a collaboration on one of her records. The pair previously released a duet on Shelton’s 2012 holiday album, Cheers, It’s Christmas.
